Boiler AMC or breakdown calls: compare the full cost
Compare a boiler annual maintenance contract with on-demand repairs using downtime assumptions, service scope, response commitments and spare-parts exclusions.

A low emergency repair invoice can hide a much larger production loss. When a boiler stops midway through a dyeing batch in Narayanganj, the relevant cost includes the interrupted process, restart work and delayed output. Choosing between an annual maintenance contract, or AMC, and on-demand breakdown calls starts with those consequences.
An AMC is valuable when its scope matches the faults your factory needs to prevent and the support it needs during a stoppage. The contract title alone tells you little. A few calendar visits without measurements, follow-up or agreed responsibilities may leave the same recurring failures in place.
Compare equivalent service scopes
Ask each supplier to price the same asset list: boiler, burner or furnace, pumps, controls and any included treatment or steam-distribution equipment. Clarify whether the contractor will inspect an item, service it, supply parts or simply report defects. Those are different deliverables.

For a factory in Savar, an attendance promise should account for site access and actual travel arrangements. For Chattogram, verify where the responding team and critical spares are based. Do not assume a sales office address establishes emergency coverage.
Model one year with visible assumptions
Consider this illustrative budget, expressed in BDT. It is a decision exercise, not an MK Boiler Solution quotation or a prediction of savings.

The apparent saving is 220,000 BDT per year. But the AMC scenario costs 180,000 BDT more before downtime. At the assumed 25,000 BDT/hour, it must avoid 7.2 hours of lost production to break even. If it prevents no downtime, this example favours the on-demand approach on cost.
This sensitivity is the point of the exercise. Ask what evidence supports the expected reduction from 24 hours to eight. Relevant evidence might include your own fault history, the proposed corrective scope and verified spare availability. A promised percentage without a baseline is not enough.
Calculate downtime without double counting
Use the contribution lost from production that cannot be recovered, then add separately justified costs such as batch disposal, overtime and restart consumables. Gross sales per hour usually overstates the loss because some variable costs are avoided. Conversely, a damaged batch may cost more than the simple hourly production allowance.
If a standby boiler maintains production, the consequence may be additional fuel cost rather than stopped output. If the factory can recover the shift later, include the incremental recovery expense and any remaining delivery effect. Finance and production should agree on this number before comparing supplier offers.
Do not count the same rejected batch both in hourly downtime and again as a full separate loss. Keep assumptions in a short worksheet so management can change them without rebuilding the proposal.
Buy fault prevention, not just attendance
Review the last year of work orders. Repeated feed-pump problems, burner trips, treatment failures and steam leaks each need a different response. A contract should explain how the relevant problem will be investigated and closed.
A useful service report records operating conditions, measurements, defects, priority, proposed action and the person responsible. It should distinguish an observation from a completed repair. For the annual scope, use the boiler maintenance checklist to agree records and shutdown preparation.
Do not require chemical descaling at every visit merely to make the scope look substantial. Inspection and treatment history should justify that work. Similarly, remote support should never become permission to bypass a protective trip so production can continue.
Define the emergency commitment precisely
Acknowledge, attend, diagnose and restore are separate milestones. A supplier may be able to commit to call acknowledgement while restoration depends on parts, safe access and inspection requirements. Put those dependencies in writing and agree who authorises additional expenditure.
Specify how the clock starts, who may raise a call, what information the factory supplies, and how the team escalates outside normal hours. Request a clear method for reporting missed commitments and resolving disputes. Commercial remedies belong in the signed agreement rather than an informal message.
Keep factory responsibilities visible
Contract support does not remove the need for competent operators, approved procedures, daily checks or inspection arrangements. HSE's boiler management guidance is a useful reference for allocating management responsibilities, though local requirements must be handled separately.
An on-demand model can suit a site with strong in-house maintenance, adequate spares and effective standby capacity. An AMC can suit a site that needs organised specialist support and help closing recurring defects. Evaluate the proposed work against your operating reality.

Common questions
Does an AMC include every repair and spare part?
Only if the signed scope says so. Pressure-part repairs, consumables, travel and replacement components may have separate prices or exclusions.
Is emergency response the same as restoration time?
No. Acknowledging a call, arriving on site, diagnosing the fault and restoring operation are different milestones and should be defined separately.
Does an AMC replace the factory boiler team?
No. The owner still needs competent operating staff, routine records, defect escalation and the required inspection arrangements.
