New or reconditioned boiler: a five-year buying comparison

Assess a used boiler’s identity, condition, repair scope and five-year cost before comparing it with a new steam boiler for your Bangladesh factory.

A reconditioned boiler can look attractive when its purchase price is well below a new unit. The difficult question is what that price buys: an identified pressure vessel with a documented repair history, or an equipment shell whose condition and installation costs are still unknown. Factory buyers in Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram should resolve those uncertainties before paying a deposit.

New equipment also needs scrutiny. A new nameplate does not guarantee that the boiler matches your steam demand, fuel supply or maintenance capability. Compare both options against one operating brief and one installed scope.

Establish identity before discussing appearance

Ask for clear nameplate photographs, manufacturer, serial number, year, design pressure and rated output. Match those details to available drawings, manufacturing records, inspection reports and ownership documents. A freshly painted casing provides no evidence about pressure-part condition.

For a reconditioned unit, request a written explanation of the work performed. Did the seller clean and repaint it, replace tubes, repair refractory, change the burner or carry out pressure-part repairs? Each activity should have traceable records where applicable. The word “reconditioned” is too broad to serve as an acceptance criterion.

Repair recordsNature and extent of previous workWere materials, procedures and examinations documented?
Burner and control detailsCurrent fitted equipmentIs it suitable for the proposed fuel and duty?

Missing information is a commercial risk to price or a reason to stop the purchase. It is not an invitation to infer the answer from the seller's assurance.

Commission a condition assessment with a defined scope

Have a competent specialist plan the examination using the available design information and history. The scope may include accessible internal and external inspection, thickness measurements, review of repairs and checks of fitted equipment. Record areas that could not be accessed so they do not disappear from the decision.

Do not accept a single ultrasonic reading as a vessel-wide assessment. Equally, a successful hydraulic test does not establish remaining life by itself. Testing and acceptance need an approved technical basis. HSE's pressure-equipment guidance highlights the importance of known operating limits and suitable maintenance; it is background engineering guidance rather than a Bangladesh approval route.

Identify the required repairs and estimate them before shipment. Include tube or refractory work, controls, valves, insulation, cleaning and recommissioning where indicated. Leave an explicit contingency for agreed uncertainties rather than burying it in an optimistic headline figure.

Verify the local route before committing

Check the applicable registration, relocation, inspection and operating requirements for the specific equipment and site with the Office of the Chief Inspector of Boilers. Confirm the current process and required documents before importing or installing the unit. This article does not assume that approval transfers automatically with a sale.

Treat fuel connection, environmental requirements and site installation as separate workstreams where applicable. Ask who owns each submission and what happens commercially if required documentation cannot be obtained. Use the inspection preparation guide to organise questions, then verify current requirements with the responsible authority.

Compare five years on one basis

The following undiscounted example uses lakh BDT, with one lakh equal to 100,000 BDT. It is an illustrative worksheet, not a market price list or a claim that all used boilers consume more fuel.

Cost over five yearsNew optionReconditioned option
Purchase, delivery and installation70 lakh40 lakh
Initial assessed refurbishment0 lakh12 lakh
Fuel at the assumed duty300 lakh330 lakh
Maintenance and replacement parts15 lakh25 lakh
Modelled downtime cost5 lakh12 lakh
Less assumed residual value−10 lakh−4 lakh
Five-year total380 lakh415 lakh

Under these assumptions, the new option costs 35 lakh BDT less over five years despite the higher initial payment. But if the reconditioned unit matches the new unit's fuel use, the gap falls to five lakh. That sensitivity explains why an unsupported efficiency assumption can decide the result before the equipment is properly assessed.

Use comparable performance evidence and expected operating hours. Include financing, taxes and discounting in the actual investment model where relevant; this simple table excludes them. Check the effect of lower production, higher repair cost and delayed start-up separately.

Make the purchase conditions measurable

Define the delivered configuration, included auxiliaries, required documents, inspection access, repairs and commissioning responsibilities in the offer. Agree acceptance criteria before payment milestones. Ask how defects discovered before dispatch or during agreed acceptance testing will be handled.

For a new unit, review the warranty's start date, labour coverage, exclusions and parts support. For a used unit, ask exactly what warranty is offered after refurbishment. In both cases, establish who provides local service and which critical components remain available.

A documented used unit can deserve consideration. A new unit can justify its premium through fit, support and operating performance. The defensible decision is the option that meets the duty with acceptable condition evidence and a credible total cost.

Common questions

Does a passed hydraulic test prove remaining life?

No. It is evidence from a particular test. Remaining suitability requires the relevant design information, examination, condition assessment and repair history.

Is a new boiler automatically the lowest-cost choice?

No. Compare installed cost, expected fuel use, maintenance, downtime and residual value under the same duty assumptions.

What should be checked before paying a deposit on a used boiler?

Confirm identity and ownership, obtain the design and repair records, arrange an independent condition assessment, and verify the applicable registration and installation route.
